meh, I gotta edit reply tweets before the reader clicks like. Sigh.

Content warning: mastodon meta- cool usage tip
on website, in advanced UI mode
if you tell in the config sliders "show in column" you can quickly filter just to see your favstars (is anyone reading) and filter to replies (so I can reply ASAP)
#mastodonapi
Did the 4.0 release break all the old API code?
In #python world, there are 3 main patterns
- mastodon.py(broken for me)
- minimal-activitypub (broken for me)
- toot (cli)
Toot appears to be active and in use and unlike the other 2, have an explicit "grant this app access to my data" step.
I just want an API lib that does this (or just works)

Holden Caulfield (from Catcher in the Rye) hates Makefile. It is full of PHONYs.
. @timbooher your account is tweeting spam. With no moderation here anymore I guess soon everyone will.
I tried to take my glasses off to read a diagram on my phone. But no glasses. My mental model is visual zoom is removing glasses until you can see the small stuff
#mastodon meta
If gmail adopted activitypub, it would ddos all other instances and would have to be defederated. But also if 1 billion hippies made a nonprofit coop anarchist commune and implemented activitypub, mastodon would still have serious scalability problems.
epiphany- until search improve here, a tweet without a hashtag is "medium private"- public, but with degraded findability
IDEA: a way to share collections of mute words. Like I have to first learn about UK politics before I can mute it all and I'd like to skip straight to muting it all.
Also, if we knew our audience could easily mute a topic, then it would be safer to have a mixed topic account without people griping that I'm doing social media wrong, instead they'd be reading social media wrong... without mute words enabled.
Ah, the spammers have arrived. Multiple accounts all posting the same pro-Russia propaganda (letter for letter) and they want to follow me. Expect viagra and gambling to follow.
No ads here, but if no money is spent on moderation, there will still be ads in the form of spam

IDEA
- YAML format for posts
- Keys are tags, maybe

- Also compatible with json, which is what everyone thinks about first when evaluating a social media message box.

Even if you don't use Facebook anymore, you still need to secure it or people will use it for confidence scams. Both me & my wife were targeted using the personas (well live accounts) of past coworkers. I know managing old accounts is a chore, but it is your professional reputation that will suffer when "you" start to promote literal scams.
I think an old coworker's FB account got taken over by a confidence scammer. They've already violated 3 norms
- starting with "hi"
- not getting to the point at 2nd interaction
- keep up with pleasantries like I'm some sort of chat bot.
Or he's really bad at social media. I think more likely it is a confidence scam.
Is there a way to follow boolean combos of tags?
"#python #ide" nothing
"#python -#snake" doesn't work
old mypy: oh, man what is that. Please write `cast(str, thing)`
new #mypy, same code: oh please. I'm insulted. Of course that is a string. Remove the redundant cast. This... this... really hurts my feelings.
How not to flunk the tech interview.... advice for the mid to lower end of the skill range
https://mattwalksintoabar.blogspot.com/2020/08/not-flunking-tech-interview.html
@TheNutrivore@mastodon.sdf.org it is the wild west. The bird site fired all the moderators, here it is just a few volunteers and server admins more skilled at tech than moderation. Also mods here gripe about moderation tools being way behind comparable platforms
folksonomy - the tag people think of 1st is the worst curated tag. The best curated tag is going to have lousy discoverability
#python - code + literal snakes
#pythonlang - code, but also people talking about tags, nearly 0 activity
Degrees of *SHOUTING* on the public square
REPLIES. The worst sort is sealioning. Injecting yourself into an argument where you weren't invited.
Filter busting. I do this all the time :(, e.g. tr*mp, el*n, birdsite
Never using any self-censoring strategies (never using hashtags, keywords, CW and doing multitopic topic account mixing your partisan politics and object oriented programming advice-- e.g. Uncle Bob-- that guy on the tech conf circuit)
Sealioning is more than just participating though, you have to be obnoxious and pushy, to the extent that that is even objective to detect.

Degrees of hiding/making filtering easy for your audience:
keyword/tag (e.g. spelling out tr*mp or el*n, knowing that many people have muted the term)
cw: UI friction to see the topic
warning in first tweet of tweetstorm (twitt*rs way of simulating CW)
posting content to entirely different account
posting content to different site (e.g. posting running to strava and not masto)
Self censoring altogether (because saying the word veg*n will summon the "mmm bacon" bros)
What's After Like? #kpop
The cameramen really wanted to show off their gear
If mastodon isn't liberal enough (or right wing enough) the solution is to build something.
e.g I disagree with the way masto hides/lacks analytics. I need my feedback- hiding it doesn't it make social media less toxic for me. For a few dozen lines of python I should be able to fix this for me & publish to pypi.

I'm coming at this from a position of pragmatism. I'm a big fan of lost causes .e.g. vegetarianism-- 100s of years of trying to make a dent in social behavior and not a lot to show for it. It makes the idealist into a pragmatist. Lets see some compromised success, rather than perfect failure.

Content warning: Meta posting strategies
Leaders of Twitter in the last decade went from encouraging posting when you are drinking coffee to encouraging posting special interests (sports events, live TV) to an algorithm encouraging posting rage. This sort of discouraged innovation.
Here, despite what all these meta posts suggest, we are back to endless experimentation.
Lawyers don't like these licenses not because they are funny but because it is unpredictable how they would play out in court
"GLWTS(Good Luck With That Shit) Public License"
https://github.com/ooguz/pfxposter/blob/master/LICENSE
Wouldn't a user, who has no role at all in moderation on small or big instances create 3 or 4 alts and cross post to deal with capricious defederation decisions?
I'm a card carrying liberal and I don't see the "racisms & bigotry"- duh, I don't follow anyone of that sort.
But the burden is on me to known it is happening & find the magic server where it isn't happening or *I* get defederated.
activitypup is a feed full dog photos
activitypub sounds like the kernel of community affiliation is what kind of moderation policies you like.
I think most people haven't even thought about that. Affiliation is family, work, religion, special interests (friends lists and roughtly tags)
I'm only posting my twitter-negative meta on twitter from now on. Hold me to it.
@msager one of us! one of us! one of us!
@stroz these new AI powered ones or the old fashion ones that remove all the background buzzing sounds but sometimes amplify the voices of people talking?

I'm stuck on auth...why can't login errors be informative
mastodon.Mastodon.MastodonIllegalArgumentError: Invalid user name, password, or redirect_uris: ('Mastodon API returned error', 400, 'Bad Request', 'invalid_grant')
5k #running is 1/2 endurance sprinting and 1/2 obstacle course running (getting around all the walkers)
Content warning: meta following strategy
I'm following techies fairly indiscriminately. I think at some point when I get metrics reports working I'll
- keep people who post good content
- mutuals
There just is not enough info or people here to use the granular targeted following I did on twitter. (unless I use twitter to find people and then, 10% of the time, use their mastodon handle to find them here)
META: you here for special interests or for your (para)social graph (to interact with friends & contacts & people)
Content warning: meta- mastodon side project idea
I want to create a plugin to fix the 'hover profile to get preview card"
I want mastodon interaction metrics. Someone deemphasized them but doesn't realize power users need them at we need *some* feedback to let us know anyone is listening.
Content warning: meta- mastodon side project idea
also, "post a tweet storm" is missing. Being able to write a blog post in one tweet is not the same thing. You can't "like" the 3rd paragraph of a long post.
