Follow me at Mastodon. I predict this website will go down and stay down. When that happens, mastodon is the most twitter-like thing out there & increasingly, it has the people. I've followed the herds since 300 baud BBSs. The herd is moving.

@acdha invisible to me, works the way it should. On twitter I would mute people as a reminder to not follow them again. And non problematic people, I'd forget who they were if they changed their handle or picture.
META: You can write notes on people's profile to remind yourself why you followed/unfollowed someone. (I think? the UX is kind of unclear on visibility of these notes)
I guess instead of tagging with META I should use the CW feature for hiding things are opt-in reading material.

Long before NFT's the copyright office let you copyright a jpg, list it in a registry suggesting your ownership. You could even sell your stake in your copyright.

twitter: "What's happening?"
me: ah, prompt box achieves sentience in its last days

twitter archive export are unusually slow or broken.
If you wait & see, it will be much harder to rebuild your social network on mastodon, especially if twitter goes down hard (my expectation)
I don't think twitter will become unpopular, I think it will cease to function for several months and then stop spending money to bring it back up.

I have chipped my teeth on the plums that were in the icebox ; and which you were probably going to chip your teeth on at breakfast; Woe is me, it should have been you.
who puts plums in a freezer anyhow. You'd have to microwave them or run them through a high speed blender.

How to find techies on mastodon:
https://twitter.com/search?q=software%20engineer%20mastodon&src=typed_query&f=user
IDEA: if your twitter friends don't migrate, create parody accounts for them & follow those accounts.
Cronometer (the nutrition facts for recipes site) has a huge UI update.
@malwaretech what hack did you use to get the blue verified checks in your handle? Is that something specific to the infosec.exchange server?
Snyk thinks every Dockerfile in my github repo is a production server with a public IP address and is holding corporate secrets that must be defended at all costs. I swear, if I had a readme that said ‘stand up server’ they’d fill daily security reports asking me to patch it.
META: simulating a quote tweet here means, reply, retweet main and then retweet comment.
Star/like doesn't mean retweet (to algo feed) at all, which is good.
Ho! got my blue check.
Win + Period, select the blue check emoji
#running - bought tennis wrist bands to keep my fitbit & garmin watches from sliding down my skinny arms. They are supposed to be two fingers above the wrist bump...essentially impossible for my arm's geometry
I'm going to have to create a pop-sci-fi account and a health-fitness-nutrition account. I know from twitter, if you mix timelines too much, the signal from one topic will overwhelm the others. I've effectively merged all my tech-related twitter accounts to here (in the sense of importing follow lists)
How did I find y'all? I used debirdify - it does a really good job of finding the mastodon accounts.
Mastodon is viable & a large enough percent of my friends/follows are already there.
This is how you find who moved-
https://pruvisto.org/debirdify/
20% follow back rate.
Servers are filling up-- Mastodon accounts are a scarce resource. Go get an account before you're frozen out.♡ 0 ↻ 0
status- trying to write a small python side project... it is already too large. I should start over and try to just create 1 good function.
META: Lost 3% of my active followers. That's never happened before. I figure it is account closures. A really high percent of people who were active here are now active on Mastodon. Yeah, yeah, I'm supposed to be on hiatus. Leaving again.
this tweet has phantom likes and phantom replies. I wonder what is up with that.

Peanut Brittle? When will they make it robust?
#running how many long runs should one do in the 4 weeks leading up to a half marathon? (3? one per weekend?)
I'm going to try to keep up a mixed topic account here, except for religion. Non-hegemonic health (veganism) and partisan politics (liberal politics) I can put behind a content warning or just not worry about it.
My religion posts tend to be preachy & increasingly technical. I think there are certain categories of content that are like a hard core autistic talking about whales... if you're not that into whales, you just will be wasting your audience's time.
♡ 1 ↻ 0Also, religion is sort of a partisan conversation online (people assume that if you're religious that you're the worst sort of southern baptist, a theist and literal believer in nonsense) ... when your quirky religious practice could be atheistic, independent & not even based on Christian material.
♡ 0 ↻ 0(oh, and among Buddhists, 80% of them figure other Buddhists are bad people unless they're members of a current institution, believe in the magic parts, etc, so layers on layers of partisanship)

So masto servers are like profile tags? I'm skeptical that is going to work. Newbies will sign up to the wrong server initially, have to migrate, or create a 2nd, 3rd account on a server that aligns to the content they write.
Everyone here will have to verify themselves like in "Altered Carbon" by making enough jokes in the character they were on Twitter that we are all convinced you're the same person.
* Altered Carbon- sci fi book where your brain was stored in a USB drive you could plug into a new body. Rejoining your old friends took lots of convos about shared memories.
Content warning: #vegan
Hey, you clicked on it, you must want this content.
Anyhow, we're 2 pecan pies into the season. The kids are making them. I kind of suspect that the egg or egg analogue serve no purpose. We've been using flaxseed.
Secret to good pie: flour and pecans that is not past its expiration date. Make pecan pies every week.
#andor - okay, episode 1 watched. No way I could have followed the plot without watching the explainer on youtube. Is this the new norm? No exposition at all because your audience will get the exposition on youtube?
Tesla & spaceX developers are held to a much lower standard - they can write crap code and the market position of the hardware will make up for it.* Pure software products are in a world of pure competition and there is less room for colossal blunders.
* If you don't like Tesla software what are you going to do, install Microsoft's? If you're an astronaut on a spacex flight, what are you going to do?
What are the best sites you've (re)discovered while waiting for the other one to finish spiraling down the bowl?
For me
- blogger.com
- google docs (if I'm going to yell into the void, a private doc works fine)
- youtube, wapo, nytime
At Twitter, the company now has 70 engineers per manager. As a low level tech manager myself, that is the same as having no managers at all. In the new, now "low trust" environment (people were fired because they suspected remote workers were lazy, pretend workers), I don't see how this doesn't lead to more indiscriminate firing.
Hello, I'm Matt & I got a social media addiction. I'm allowing myself to be here though & not the other one. Social media is a weird deal with a devil - you get a gambling addiction-like affliction in return for relief from the existential angst and loneliness.
@onlyhisway@social.linux.pizza Just ran my first 3 miles in them and agree, they're in a class of their own.
I'm on a 1 month hiatus from twitter, but this is required reading for anyone left here thinking about how much time to devote to twitter ('cause building a following ain't free)
