@CovidActNow ruined their maps- now only the Thanksgiving-Chrismas megasurge will even register as an event. This is like NOAA deciding to only report when you are in a hurricane, but only when the eye is close.

Job reqs for new candidates- your name needs to be Matthew, David, or Sai. The team is standardizing on names, having so many names on the team was causing confusion.
There are still a few hours to put off doing your taxes.

Income taxes are done & can't we switch to a national VAT tax already. Just pay staff at TurboTax whatever money they're making now to stare a shiny light show until they can transition to a new career, nationalize the company and shut them down forever.
Are you filing "married filing a combined separate return? (real category)" or "divorced married filing not filing separate combined"?

An org's password policy, more & more, is the password policy of your users' password management system (LastPass, etc). Someday orgs should just integrate with these & then passwords can be 8000 bits & rotate every 20 minutes & be challenged every 5 minutes or whatever

I'm sick with non-covid flu-like something in Fairfax, VA - what could it be?
Personally I think it is CVE-2021-44228, and I'm not paying royalties on the JVM. I don't know how it got installed, but I won't be able to play applets in a DNA-architecture-neutral way without it.
♡ 0 ↻ 0CDC isn't sure it is RSV. It is surging in WV, but not in VA. I bet testing rates are wildly different by state.

A lot of plastic intended for recycling gets burned- it is make of oil, it burns like oil & can be burned for heat in cement plants for example.
So this means, landfill is a better place for the carbon in that plastic, if recycling is a sham anyhow.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmGrI_BVlnc
And by sham, I mean, most of that recycle plastic doesn't get turned back into things for sale.

If you don't ban certain forms of speech, the platform will lose all users. I can think of several social media sites, big & small that were overrun by spam and became irrelevant. https://x.com/yishan/status/1348548920616472576
Mastodon, Discord, Facebook - you have to do an expensive reciprocal invite-accept cycle, some central person has to keep the content flowing & an admin has to keep order. It's social, but it sure isn't like twitter. Site discover & person discover prob too.
I have hardly followed anyone new on facebook in ages- feels like I need to know someone IRL before FB. Discord & Mastodon- gotta discover them in the first place, also high risk of being a ghosttown like a phpBB forum.

This is it- platforms need to be able to censor behaviors (coordinating a coup, murder, etc) and some people want to relabel those behaviors as speech, the same way unlimited campaign spending (behavior) got labeled as speech. https://x.com/yishan/status/1514940632187346945
If @elonmusk buys @Twitter & turns it into Gab, this is really going to ruin Tesla's image.
First world problems- I gotta move my office to the basement in summer and the top floor in the winter. This is inconvenient & worse, I'm pretty sure I can't RDP from the one machine to the other because of corporate VPN.
We should* start buying Twitter stock to drive it way over Elons max price.
* Yeah, not sure where I'd find spare cash either.
If Elon Musk buys Twitter, he's doing it so he can put the last president back on Twitter to help him get elected next round & so Elon can start collecting government quid pro quo subsidies. He's not a man of principle, he's got a plan.
Almost no one who complains about coding interviews has a work sample. Some percent who do have a work sample can't talk about it because they didn't write it. Not all candidate pools are chock full of the best people. https://x.com/GergelyOrosz/status/1514497505890816001

I'm thinking of decarbonizing my house & step by step just phasing out (consumer burned) fossil fuels
- heat pump water heater

This will probably take a few years
KitchenAid gets a chance to boost its reputation for dishwashers as Miele & Bosch dishwashers are nowhere to be found. BestBuy thinks they can get me one by Wednesday.
Did you known KitchenAid's parent makes 1/3 of dishwashers in the US & the Ohio plant is the largest dishwasher plant in the world. I probably would still get a Bosch, but their factory is almost closed at the moment.
♡ 0 ↻ 0Well, it was in stock & we found out that the opening is not large enough because the home flipper put in hardwood floor and lost about an inch of clearance. New status: shopping for a dishwasher by dimensions instead of features now.
♡ 0 ↻ 0We got an LG dishwasher. Eyepopping prices ($1500 installed), but it was in stock and BestBuy et al, did get it installed.
This one in particular: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lg-24-top-control-smart-built-in-dishwasher-with-truesteam-tub-light-and-quiet-operation-black-stainless-steel/6182517.p?skuId=6182517♡ 0 ↻ 0It will take 10+ years to do a proper review because one of the selling features is that the motor is supposed to last 10 years. Otherwise, compared to the last 3 "what-is-the-cheapest-trash-available" dishwashers, it is a pleasure to use.

My new house was build for someone how tall?
toilet - short
wall mounted shelves - shorter than me (hit my head on one)
kitchen shelves - someone tall
shower - about my height
It bothers me that this is an obvious utilitarian optimization problem & no such thing was considered
This aged poorly. 19 hours later, our 12 year old dishwasher has a leak. Sensible thing is to buy a Bosch 800, but there is a 6-8 month wait, where you pay now and then wait half a year for it to arrive. https://x.com/mistersql/status/1512233310361202714
LIFEHACK: Don't get a flu/common cold the days before a house move. Plan it for a few weeks later.
Well those were the worst movers I've ever hired.
1/1001
None of the staff had a day of moving experience. The foreman kept ordering them around like they were old hands. Disassemble/reassemble furniture? The people have never worked with IKEA furniture in their life.
♡ 1 ↻ 0Protect the walls? Nope, bang, smash all the way up and down the stairs. Protect the furniture? Nope, bang, smash. More breaks and scratches than any move I've ever done.
♡ 1 ↻ 0Well, did I save money? Nope, I will need to hire a cleaner/handy man/skilled carpenter to try to fix the mess. There is a huge dent in the drywall in the rental I was leaving and three scratches, new splinters on the railings.
♡ 0 ↻ 0How many pieces of furniture got ruined? About 3. Have these guys ever seen a house where you need to disassemble the rails to get a queen mattress up the stairs? Nope, I figured it out only after they left.
♡ 0 ↻ 0To top it off, I was so sick when the move was happening I delegated most of the work-- still the staff didn't listen to the foreman, so why would they have listened to me.
♡ 0 ↻ 0In a fully de-skilled/amateur-hour move:
- make them wrap everything in plastic. It cuts down on the amateur hour damage
- put down paper runners, get rid of booties
- disassemble your own furniture, forbid them to attempt to disassemble/reassemble anything♡ 0 ↻ 0We still tipped them, and I will leave a negative review. I was mugged by a mover who didn't want to face up to the fact that he had to hire amateurs who won't listen to basic directions.
♡ 0 ↻ 0My previously spotless house looks like it has been lived in for 10 years. Hire section-8 and college dorm moving specialists, get a house that looks like a section-8 dorm
♡ 1 ↻ 0
Sigh. Gonna need a handyman to try to fix all the dings. Don't get movers unless they wrap everything, otherwise you have to rely of a deep pool of skilled movers and by today's experience that doesn't exist.
META: yeah, but would you pay to edit the typos in other people's tweets?
