Oh so much this. What passes as good enough to accept in material anthropology (what were cave men like) and what passes for good enough evidence for economics vs physics-- it's all so different. https://x.com/kareem_carr/status/1363690423101882368

roblox drama! the admin of my son's favorite map changed & the admin demoted all the previous mods & admins & nerfed everyone's characters. I thought it was because the admin was kicking out the non-payers but it now it appears that all the players/mods/admins are <10...
so this is more lord of the flies than money grubbing (the developer of a map can earn real money from players & our son plays with a free account)

Making an `always_free` application framework... in the idea/stub stage... My first proof of concept idea to use won't work because I'd need 6TB of db space.
https://github.com/matthewdeanmartin/always_free
AWS's always free tier *almost* lets you create an entire serverless app. But it is missing lots of basics, like static website hosting, the domain, caching, throttling, etc. & since you chose AWS, if this isn't a training toy, you need a payment processor or you can't scale up.

IDEA: need some time away from the family? after a long day of WFH, head to the office to catch some sleep overnight and return home rested and ready to WFH.
Take out 9 electric substations and 100% of the country loses power for 18 months, resulting in 90% of everyone dying (how'd they calculate the famine part?) https://x.com/ViciousVibrato/status/1363115860865540102

How many meetings happen at the home office? So many that my 4 year old just said to the 8 year old "Let's have a meeting in the bedroom"
On the way to Ocean City, somewhere in DE or MD, there is a sign warning people who've moved there from the big city to not ruin the county. The subtext of course is that there is something different and wrong about people from DC. https://x.com/_SJPeace_/status/1362813185603080193
So I just minted mattcoin, 1 trillion coins. I sold one to my 8-year-old son for $1. So $1T market cap, man. All mattcoins will be hoarded and used only for speculating. It is world-changing I tell you.

a: Have you heard of gitlab? I'm the one that named the "gitlab-ci.yml" file.
New code deployed to Mars, just in time before the Friday deadline.
Cruising along at 8288 miles per hour, landing in 40 minutes. No matter how fast you're going, feels like it always takes 40 minutes to get to work. https://x.com/jasteinerman/status/1362491961911967746

What's the OIG number for reporting pineapple on pizza/pineapple missing from pizza?
I'm thinking if I could make an AWS app framework that uses only the "always free" features:
- App tier: Lambda, SNS, SQS, Step Functions
- Data tier: DynamobDB
Just missing a way to serve static files & the domain name hosting.
And hidden costs, seems like AWS bills got those
LastPass costs money now if you want it to work on your phone and PC. I guess all useful free services either disappear or start to cost money.
Disappointed that "how to express grahams number in css for z order" returns nothing in google.
encode() turns it into English.
decode() turns it into German
You're welcome.
#pip should have a rule that says, don't install a package that was pushed 5 minutes ago. Let someone else find out if it is broken.
https://pypi.org/project/cryptography/#history <-- updated 5 minutes ago and broken
How often do interruptions happen around here? Well, I'm paused 7 minutes in on the "Learn Go in 12 Minutes", so I guess I should look for "Learn Go in 7 minutes"
so still working on my so_pip tool.
- download & package up 1 answer or question DONE
- generate a substantial package worth publishing to pypi...nope.
So why is that?
Most SO answers are really short & not in a re-usable format, i.e. bad candidates for a library.
But what is? Probably collectively the 8000 boto3 answers after filtering for answers with more than 15 lines of code. So I'm going to try that next.♡ 0 ↻ 0

Son's learning to code & we're at `m=p/f+c` So time to talk about order of operations. Problem is, this is just bad syntax, all the syntax from math is bad syntax, people just tolerated it for 500 years because it didn't have to run on a machine flawlessly.
expressions like this should force parens. we stopped trying to save keystrokes long ago, paren savings is false economy

seemingly unpopular opinion- build tools should fail on 0 workload. So if you ask a linter to lint 0 files, it should fail. It means the user of the tool failed to get the cli incancation right. Instead they "succeed" with no output.

I've got to stop spending time on yaml formatting. When it comes to formatting, ALL linters are WRONG if an automatic formatted disagrees. If there is no automatic formatted, the linter is WRONG.

*formatter. Spellcheck is sometimes wrong too.

I can fork a library and publish it to pypi about 3 weeks to 3 years faster than a PR can get someone's attention and turn into a release to pypi.
#python Craziest thing... I update pip and it installs every pip since version 0.3 ... am I going to research this? nope, nuking it all from space, removing every python from the machine to reinstall from scratch.
What are the key signs of dementia?
>Memory Loss. Seriously, you can't remember to call close on that object?
>Agitation. So much cussing when the build fails
>Impaired Judgement. We keep doubling down on more JS
>Money Trouble. You were trying to add blockchain to the db again
>Difficulty with Familiar Tasks. I see you googling for the difference between slice, substr and substring
>Trouble Planning. 80 of these jira tickets have been here for three years.
>Misplacing Things. You lost your ssh keys again.♡ 1 ↻ 0
The superaged, yeah, they've got more experience, but they don't have to live through the results of their decisions, they've got no skin in the game.*

My take-there was only one person in the audience for the trial that matters-McConnell, he said his position, so everyone is doing the rational thing and stopping. McConnell wants or doesn't care if Trump is president again in 2024. Maybe McConnell is dead by then, so why care?
Likert scales soliciting criticism (like employee, team evals) are such BS.
- praise no problem, hand out those 5s
- criticism, if you got nothing good to say, say nothing at all. So that's a five or you skip the question.
Wow, look at all those 5s! So much info in this survey.
Has anyone published an insider story about what happened to cause Skype for Business to go from being a fine, nay, wonderful consumer video calling app to an usuable $#!+show after Microsoft bought it?
I don't see how work-from-hotel makes economic sense. For $1300 a month, I could sell my current home, & buy another with $1300 higher mortgage ($275K of mortgage)

Re: the Assange stuff
I don't sympathize with him. If we took FOIA type thinking to the limit, then any protected class (journalists) or just anyone would be able to request anything, no secrets. I'd start with FOIA for the database passwords & AWS keys. No secrets is unworkable
Snowden engaged in civil disobedience & is paying a legal price. This is how civil disobedience works, to advance your higher goal, you pay a price.
Civil disobedience shouldn't get an automatic pass just because it was for a good cause.♡ 2 ↻ 0Ha, I limit replies to signal, "Hey, I'm just talking 'cause it's twitter and I can & not inviting a fight club, twitter responds by putting a HUGE BLUE "HEY Y'ALL, YOU CAN REPLY!" lozenge below my tweet.

Misreading cues on a zoom? There are no cues, it's all cameras off & mute all the time.
https://stackoverflow.blog/2021/02/11/why-are-video-calls-so-tiring-you-might-be-misreading-cultural-styles/?cb=1&_ga=2.135810481.1423257440.1613068188-1172699940.1592592970
In this taxonomy "wait vs interrupt culture" neither culture gets their normal start/stop cues.
Ask vs guess culture- now no one has any clues, so everything has to be an explicitly ask even if it puts someone in a rough spot to have to say no.♡ 0 ↻ 0
this #scrum stuff- it is a process improvement project. but with non-technical scrum masters, then we start to get a ticket management improvement process. Automated pipelines and practices (unit testing) start to disappear from the dialog.
I'm trying to imagine toyota's process improvement process if the car making part was to complicated to talk about and it became a way to progressively improve how the time cards got punched, since it is a lot easier for everyone to discuss that.

If enough people are invited to a zoom, that's the experience for all but 2-4 people for all zooms. True for in-persons, too. https://twitter.com/poliscipunk/status/1360216715540508678
What are the odds this was a company culture where juniors couldn't raise red flags to anyone? It is really, really, really hard to get anyone to care about hypothetical security risks. "Who would ever bother to hack into a windows 7 machine? What's the worst that could happen?" https://x.com/newsguyusa/status/1360031137632985095
(The over-reaction to this is a culture where the security has never met a security flaw that it didn't want to fix, including the ones that take $, lots of hours & it's hard to say what the value will be if any)
