@NoOrdinaryJeff welcome back to mastodon world. My current opinion on how to enjoy this place is to either find the right client that clicks with your mind works or to write a custom client from scratch. The default clients are very opinionated about how to use mastodon, imho.

Focusing on the wrong thing is incredibly conservative. (Think minutia, or the irrelevant, focus on the little things, no big thing will ever change) If you want your enemy to do nothing, encourage them focus on the wrong thing. So I guess it follows, the liberal thing to do is to pick carefully what to focus on.

The reverse chronological feed is the laziest algorithm. Puts the burden of filtering drek onto the user.
The algorithmic feed that optimizes time-on-site and engagement is just evil and cheap tricks, the equivalent of saying "wait there's more" when someone is about to leave the site.
For my custom mastodon client, I'm adding filters, like "storms, shorts, discussions, etc" and there are so many API and db query expensive things to do, like for discussions, if I can't see the root user's post maybe I don't care to see the replies in the discussion tab.
Storms/shorts/news I just need that last month of posts, but for "cool software" I really need the entire post history of the user.

I think these are both true and it was true some people were asking just fine.
In the past if I was going to answer a question, I might google it to get some confirmation. Nowadays, I would ask the LLM and since I'm not a monster I'd validate the results. And probably google it.
But that is banned I think? So the next reason for failure is
- a culture of purity, it is better that nothing happen on SO than to allow LLMs to be involved. (SO's official LLM is a RAG tool)

I tried to create a sandbox using "import interception" and decided this is a hard problem because the LLMs are smart enough to try c-interop if the subprocess module is blocked and if that is blocked, they can try something else and so on.

So if you are old you are stuck between wanting to down regulate the immune system (because of pervasive inflammation) and upregulating it (because you're trying to avoid pneumonia).

I don't got data to check, but I suspect productivity for a given person or a given day is usually some exponential looking function, ie. a few days with incredible productivity and a long tail of days with barely measurable productivity.
So obviously, planning proceeds with an assumption of linear productivity.

Zeros are bad, but non-zero productivity is going to be a fuzzy measure, maybe not even reliably ordinal (e.g. one developer did 5 MRs, one did 10 MRs, that might not mean 5<10 or that 10 = 2*5 **after converting to outcomes**)
