I'm guessing this guy helped the US army, left Afghanistan to avoid being imprisoned/killed for helping the US army, and was expecting to be deported to be imprisoned/killed or just imprisoned in the US or deported to some random country in Africa.

When you immisserate a large population of people with no where to go, should we be surprised that they fight back?
Anyhow, a fascist regime needs this political violence so they can continually crack down on the freedoms of the citizens so that the rulers can peacefully rob the national treasury.
♡ 0 ↻ 0One news source said the guy was granted Asylum in April during the Trump administration.

I will be re-architecting my brain around async-await, so if I look like I'm sleeping, I am, and I'll wake up as soon as you get to the point. Ah shoot, I didn't await that and everything arrived out of order.
I don't understand how people pay for email subscriptions. My email is a constant flood. If I was rich enough to support independent writers, I wouldn't want to read it in an my gmail. Maybe on a kindle I guess, but kindle never seemed really set up to deal with that.
Rejoice, the year can't get any worse, there is so little of it left.
Despair, I can re-use this joke for over a month.
IBM makes it clear that if you want to touch mainframe tech, for any reasons, you need to be a large organization, like military or government size & pipsqueek countries like France need not apply.
AWS is like, "Hey you can do this for free on your personal credit card"
But I keep seeing these AWS billing horror stories where an account has a phase transition and flips into the $1000 to $100,000 a month.
Anyhow, feels like there are more horror stories than posts about successful SAAS's with low AWS bills.

It has never been easier to switch over to Bluesky.
They got starter packs for your initial friends feed and the Discover tab is a very good algorithm

An account I follow with 5000 followers is getting ~20 views per post. That is 10x lower than it was at twitters peak. 90% of people are gone.
Logging in to unfollow some people. I think a lot of people are still here on twitter because they got a (large) follower count.
- cross posters? unfollowed, can catch them elsewhere
- not a mutual? unfollowed
- brands & the like? unfollowed♡ 0 ↻ 0
This is the most interesting post I've read on #COBOL. COBOL is an alternative syntax to Assembler because of how COBOL at a syntax level lets you, makes you deal with memory like Assembler does.
#GnuCobol compiles to C, so GnuCobol is going to have the same paradigm mismatch that OtterCobol ran into.
#gcobol looks like it doesn't not have a c-transpilation layer. But I could be reading the docs wrong.

From looking at my LinkedIn feed, there is a dead cat bounce in the federal IT hiring market. Jobs are out there, go get 'em!
Remote Angular work for US Federal Client. I worked a bit with the tech lead and can endorse the them. Legislative Branch so a bit more stable than Executive branch.
America has only one AZ, so when I am president we will create two more Arizonas for fail over.
The experience of shopping for a home server has not improved. I finally ended up with a new minipc on account of worries about noise, electricity use vs a similarly priced old machine. It appears that AI is commandeering so much of the memory market that the supply of chips are drying up, so I settled for 32gb.
What part of the shopping experience did I not like? So many number compare. So what about benchmarks? So many benchmarks.
The guys doing youtube reviews, they have a intuitive feel for price, value and performance in many scenarios and the graphs and flood of numbers just don't translate into me having the same feel for "yeah this is fast enough for something"

Me shopping for a home server: It has to have 64GB
Me picking a ec2 instance type for my personal account: 500mb and 1/2 a cpu is plenty.
1/2gb ec2 machine is $36 a year
64GB ec2 machine is ~$4800 a yearA 64gb home server is $500 for a 5-7 year old machine.

"toxic productivity" isn't a thing. Hustle culture is modern poverty & insecurity-- having food & tech that would make a 1200AD peasant envious but you can lose it at anytime. "toxic productivity" is a word for the leisure class (or who think they're in the leisure class) to look down on people that have to hustle for a living.
Personal Productivity Youtube:
- Waay too much advice on how youtubers organize their youtube video creation process.
- Ali Abdaal was rich, is rich and has a staff. With those advantages, I could have the worst productivity system and my staff would get A LOT done for me.
- Pocket notebooks, what are they good for? Ideas for the next youtube video. Also collecting them like stamps.
Notion- write your own application & on net it will save you time! (no it won't)
Bullet Journal- Hand copy ALL the todo list items you failed to do every 30 days as punishment for not doing them.
GTD- In the book the guy describes doing a 1:1 consult with a rich executive and working thru the process. It is like a secretary's system for managing their rich boss's flood of messages and demands.♡ 1 ↻ 0Fwiw, I think there are many personal productivity systems and they vary depending on
- is your week wide open, 16 hours a day, 100% self directed, like a full time youtuber
- is your schedule yanked around by your job & "adulting"/ e.g. responding to the world putting demands on your time♡ 1 ↻ 0TODO: invent a new personal productivity system.

Haaaands... and how (past) anthropologists could not stop projecting their 1800s/1900s culture war hobby horses on our extinct near relatives. In short, researchers felt it was important that we have no vegetarian ancestors.
IDEA: we live code on twitch fixing bugs at the office and project managers at our company watch and when they're happy they tip us $250. If the tips stop, we switch to gaming until the tips resume.

This weekend I'm going to informally benchmark Gemini 3 by giving it code that 2.5 wrote and asking it to find bugs. Not the best benchmark because you could give 2.5 code that 2.5 wrote and it would find bugs too.
I've been wanting to try [Claude|Codex|Gemini|OpenCode] CLI, but from my experience with Codex, I just can't think of good tasks that
- won't bankrupt me
- would probably work
The agentic stuff needs to have a super focused loop- do this simple thing over and over. When the loop is, "make a complex decision over and over and pick one of 100s of possible tools" the bots performance is trash.♡ 0 ↻ 0I do want to try the Cursor|Antigravity but only because I think it would be a better way to get a bot to write/update a UI.
but
- I don't like VSCode
- I suspect it would bankrupt me♡ 0 ↻ 0
We are closer to the reference event half as old than the third reference event than the midpoint reference event is to a third reference event and that will be surprising as long as your memory of events is ordinal and time is cardinal. Isn't that astonishing and doesn't it make you feel old and incapable of judging the absolute passage of time?
If rust used Bash's error handling, everything would be fine because the important thing is to ignore errors and if that doesn't work ignore them even harder. A billion lines of production quality Bash can't be wrong
My lungs have two availability zones. Hasn't helped in the slightest. They're both malfunctioning, no third zone to fail over to.
What would it be like to fall into a real (spinning) black hole?
Nothing, nothing, you're a firey cloud of plasma.
I'm skeptical about getting any meat-spaghetti.
I also don't have the math to back up my theory.
@AlSweigart Free for all. It will be a 20 candidate Republican national convention unless Vance has the social capital to prevent a national convention. I don't see Vance pulling it off, it isn't like Vance can execute his enemies just off screen on live TV.

Optimistically speaking tho, the "Authoritarian Stack" is going to run into the same "modernization" problem that normies have been dealing with for the last ~100 years since the first Hollerith machines came online.
They'll spend a decade trying to switch everything to a new stack and will get punched in the face over & over by social realities. If being authoritarian solved all the problems in "Kill it with fire" then North Korea would be a tech paradise.
You can't just turn off all the old computers. Henry Ford tried to fire all the accountants (and did! they had to weigh paper to estimate costs and revenue!).
So you have to do a switch over and that will take years, multiple administrations. And end the end, in 2035, you'll have your nice 1984 machine ready to come online after just another decade of software development.

Well you can write gnuCOBOL *today* if you want to write cobol and get it merged into Cpython (because gnuCOBOL first compiles to C)
Doesn't look like rust compiles to C, yet.
You want a cracked motherboard? Because that is how you get a cracked motherboard.
IDEA: `git blame` but it blames anyone but you. The framework was bad, you were sabotaged by everyone around you, the specs were incomplete and changed frequently, you weren't given enough autonomy.
