annual pluralsight on sale today - for me it has been the best way to absorb technology which is a combo of knowing things you read + watching how someone does it https://www.pluralsight.com/offer/2019/june-eoq?acta=webengage

what I want is a tool that takes a AWS key and attempts all actions or all actions in a service (say RDS, ec2, s3) then undoes any action that succeed & reports back what rights the key actually has.
Ordinary techniques work best for specimens over 400 years old. Plus I'm still alive and consuming carbon-14, so any date is a moving target. https://x.com/Boii_McCoy/status/1137952077261524992

Want the 4 part name of a .net DLL?
[System.Reflection.Assembly]::Load("mything.dll").FullName
Ha! Sucker, your DLL is now locked and VisualStudio compilation is failing with a misleading message until you close the powershell window.
OH: "We don't have time for unit tests, build scripts, build servers, homogenizing environments. We only have time for changing code directly in production."

AWS Lambda (Azure Functions) is like Robotic Process Automation in that it lets you duct-tape over all the weird breakage and organization constraints that stand between you and getting anything done. https://x.com/mistersql/status/1137750696806105088
good news! I solved a thing with AWS lambda.
bad news! Now I have to read up on how to do AWS lambda with a crippled AWS key.
Why the uptick in people using MS Code instead of Visual Studio?
(I left around the time of version hell, where if you didn't have the right version of SQL, IIS, EF, WebAPI etc, everything was broken)
How to write Yellow World in Jquery:
$("body").css("background-color", "yellow")
So you spent to much time trying to create an ssh enabled user & nothing works even though you created the keys perfectly? Check AllowUsers in sshd_config.

This was a common automation pattern sold to automate HR, it pushes the paperwork burden from the HR staff to each person in the rest of the org, which presumably is slower, more error prone & has a higher per hour wage. https://x.com/ReidDoss/status/1136990207360884737
If you work from home, do you where pants when video conference calling?
Cloud technologies that vendors allow to be disabled will fail. Enterprises can disable CloudFormation on their accounts but they can't disable Terraform & Ansible. So CloudFormation will fail.

How are we elevating rights...
I can't fit five laptops & a monitor on my desk at the same time. I don't think even IKEA has a desk to support this workflow.
Look! Ubuntu on Windows 10! It looks like there is nothing stopping me from turning it on!
Oh, you got Windows 10, 1607 LTSB. MS accidentally shows it as possible, but has disabled it.
Sigh. Back to git-bash

Sorry somoneone denied you ec2:CreateImage. You'll have to make do with volume snapshots https://x.com/mikebailey97/status/1136465767837442053

I'm growing old, got the memory of a gold fish now. All I remember is people tapping on the glass and food bits floating down from above.
I think now understand one variant of Devops - and how to correctly write it.
Dev team automates things & ops team is generally ignored.
Variation on Devops as "firing/not hiring server admins and assigning those tasks to the dev team." https://x.com/mistersql/status/1136300732842487808/photo/1
On one hand, this is bad, on the otherhand, if this split was a historical accident (just a common way of dividing IT depts into divisions), then sure why not, make all devs and admins devops folk.

I just want to say, forcing folk to use volume snapshots instead of AMI is an awful, awful, awful idea. What is wrong with creating a backup of an ec2 image using AMIs? Is it because there is a way to make an AMI public?
#aws
if you create copies of your ec2 machines by snapshot, to restore to new machine
-snap shot machine *drives* you'd like to copy
-convert snapshot to volume
-create ec2 machine, stop it
-throw away the root volume
-attach restored volume to /dev/sda1

Onboarding is huge. Not doing onboarding, imho, costs the organization about a month to 3 months of new staff's salary, so $20,000 grand.
(I read somewhere that just hiring a new dev costs the org $40,000 for all costs) https://x.com/jnschrag/status/1135677947325689856

I agree with this. Don't set folk straight on all their wrong thoughts unless they are inviting it. It wastes everyone's time. People give lip service to "open debate & opposing opinions" but really, folk don't have time for your drama. https://x.com/polotek/status/1131367166270267395
Apple is telling us to take a stand. Because at $999, you probably can't afford one.
