Salaries of lawyers and other highly educated workers used to be really low. Only after technical breakthroughs did knowledge work become productive enough to be worth paying people to do it. Talking to the mother-in-law (grew up in Pacific Islands), on if it is time to get out of the US. While it is bad, not quite "catch the last helicopter out of Vietnam" bad. Not yet, not for me personally. Plenty of groups of people, both US citizen and non, for whom it is probably prudent to leave for awhile, which is the goal of the current administration.
