@ebooksyearn If I was a spammer, I guess I'd want to figure out which emails have could have humans at the other end, i.e. didn't bounce. I guess it is test message instead of a scam offer because they intend to sell the batch of non-bouncing addresses.
@magnus919 For following a tag, you need the biggest instance e.g mastodon.social
A special interest instance like mastodon.radio will have a good instance feed, but won't have most of the things posted to ham radio centric tags.

My water heater and heat pump have onboard computers. Before the houses expected demise, the home owner will be doing retro computing. Soon all of us will be doing #retrocomputing except no 8bit games, just HVAC and appliances
Researching my old bosses to fill in resumes and one of them died, tragically and fairly young. Damn. Sorry USAJobs, he doesn't have a phone number anymore.

My cover letter is Q.
A star trek reference should be enough to get me a job.

For a cloud native app with 6+ AWS services how many techies/specialists to support one cloud native app*?
cloud native = isn't a lift/shift app that avoids using anything that didn't exist in 1998.
Seems like there should be rule of thumb for a ratio of services to specialists

Bimodal distribution. My bias makes me think the people voting 12+ have the experience with AWS's great galloping complexity and the people suggesting 1 person can be expert enough will someday gain that same experience.

If your secret clearance is lapsed, is there any point in applying to jobs that call for a secret clearance?
Are they just collecting resumes? Is this like "internal only" jobs in the civil service, except for "internal to industry"?
Is that something that employers compromise on (changing req from has-clearance to clearable?)
Not a question about the superficial meaning of "Must be clearable" vs "Has active TS/poly". Asking if employers really mean it.
To beat a dead horse, you can post a job req asking for a unicorn and hope to get a candidate with every box checked, but when it doesn't materialize, do dctech companies sigh and say, "Well, I guess we need to move this candidate through the clearance process"?

In an alternate universe I stayed in academia and am(?) doing economics & taking streams of data that have correlations and doing the extra math to find out what the causal model is.
My pronouns for me and my counter parts in alternate universes are I and me.
"But Matt, correlation isn't causation, look at this website of spurious correlations"
Well, they-uh culpa, someone didn't do science communication with nuance.

**Me: **Build master Yoda, do I pin my dependencies, loosely pin dependencies, or upgrade & relock the dependency file nightly?
**Build master Yoda:** All paths lead to suffering!
**Tired: **practicing Leet code questions to pass a stage 0 interview
**Wired: **create a SaaS service to do a CAPTCHA algorithm to guess if the person answering is copy pasting, manually copying or organically answering/writing code.
And I'd be able to write it so the focus is taken off "did you get the right answer." I got a job once where I didn't solve the coding challenge on the whiteboard but they believed with modern crutches (IDEs, etc) I'd do fine.
I've been asked to do a leet code coding challenge as a stage 0 interview screen. As I understand it, it is unattended by humans. In the age of google & chatgpt, how do they handle cheating?
My possibly ill-informed opinion on the mainframe developer market
#zOS work has so many barriers
- Can't run it locally. Only 1 training program at IBM for terminal access. (wrong! prersonal edition exists)
- The only mainframe code you can run locally is MVS from the early 1980s
- GNUCobol is probably not like modern IBM Cobol
- Microfocus appears to be in financial crisis and you can't even get a trial license compiler, let alone a personal license compiler
1/2
- Rexx has like no internet presence (compared to popular languages)
- Stories about people getting a job in the US doing mainframe work and then 2 years later the whole firm is outsourced to juniors in India (i.e. this is treated as a cost center with a value of skills & experience at $0)
2/3♡ 1 ↻ 0- Job postings want extensive experience with IBM stack even though most stories I hear about people doing mainframe now didn't spend their days from College to Now doing mainframe, they were doing PC stack work. People who started doing mainframe right out of college... that generation of people is mostly dead, but the job ads are still trying to recruit them.

Conference for criminals interested in French music hall dance: Cancanconcon
I read about sw dev shops that really take estimating seriously and they reported doing like days of estimates on upcoming tasks.
Were they, like, writing code to see how long it took? I want to know. Did they write 1/2 & estimate it will take that much time again? Or were they like, intensely staring in to space thinking, "WHAT COULD IT BE??"
How to reboot your windows computer:
```powershell
Restart-Computer -Delay 0
```
You can also start a #MicrosoftTeams call and wait for the computer to overheat and turn itself off.
At least I think that is what happened, nothing got logged before the computer abruptly shut off.
Do you use any time tracking applications (screen recorders, rescue time, wakatime)?
THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE COMPANY MANDATED SPYWARE. That's bad. Not asking about that.

Some jobs (tax accounts) have to track & report their time in 7 minute increments. Lots of jobs ask you to estimate & track in hours how long something took. LOTS of jobs want to know hours worked in aggregate. Just saying, despite this tech making some people incandescently angry, a lot of jobs require gathering the data somehow.

Advice, if you use a potato for a microphone, dice them with onion and fry them up. Your audience still can't hear you but it will be delicious.
What's going on with tech salaries. Are salaries flat but the unemployment rate is higher? Or have salaries gone down? Are certain categories getting hammered?
So many numbers, can't make any sense of what the stories are.
https://www.dice.com/technologists/ebooks/tech-salary-report/salary-trends.html
Supervisory roles are getting hammered. Imho, the supervisor's role don't go away, but the wage premium for them does. And the org chart is flattened to give more power to the tippy top.

@proactivepaul What you need is either time, or something like ChatGPT (or pay a human tutor, I'm not here to argue LLMs) to step you through the rough edges of using python with the terminal. No heavy or light IDE can compensate for things like the challenges of creating venvs or installing packages that are wrappers around secret c++.
I ran so far I think I'm in Austria or somewhere #running I hear from the Icelanders that there are good cakes here.
1 hour later I got two sheets scanned. That's 30 minutes per scan. 59.5 minutes to install crapware, 30 seconds to scan. #brother scanners don't get my vote of approval.
Weirdly printing just works, you just have to plug in the printer.

Off the top of my head I can't think of anyone else keeping alive the dream of coding by visually connecting squares.

Using LLMs for job hunting:
**BAD IDEAS**
- Writing any text for humans, not cover letters, not resumes. People recognize ChatGPT immediately and it can't help your case.
**GOOD IDEAS**
- code gen LaTeX for your resume & other nerd-snipping side-quests
- generate practice interview question, but not validating your answers!
- Finding flaws in your English, but *don't let the bot fix it*
- LLM side projects. But like with 3rd party template you need to explain what part of the effort was yours
I kind of wish the jobs boards had a good API and I could use an LLM for RAG, i.e. "hey bot, find the jobs that I qualify for" and use that as a 1st pass for finding the jobs.

@neurobashing Make & Just are both good ways to package up bash in a way that bash functions are not.
What is the bullshit I just spoke to. It is an LLM with the personality of an automated menu system that verbally collects data that they could have gotten from my resume, or from a web form.

I'll delete these tweet tomorrow, lest they read it and think I don't like them.
