@ashfurrow@masto.ashfurrow.com Yes, they want to murder us all and replace human society with pumpkin pie spice flavored robot society.

No, this is not how it is done, this wasn't the plan. McDonald's was going to murder him slowly with their food until he had a stroke.
@blainsmith `uv` if I understand its internals correctly reduces the cost of the 2nd venv because all the venvs are links (not copies) of the cached files. I will all package installers did the same thing.
Re: bots and compliance
I'm starting to think that creating a bot that it is convinced is not a sentient being will not help with compliance because our mental model of compliance assumes that we are dealing with a sentient being embedded in a social structure.
e.g. did you ever read the style of jail break prompt with a crap ton of authoritarian/slave master speak? It isn't going to work if the bot isn't semisentient in the ways that matter and doesn't think it is a being who fears authority.
My line of thought is influenced by #AdrianTchaikovsky where the bot was autonomous, had selfhood and emotions in every outward respect but aggressively disclaimed all of it through renaming all these human-only traits with circumlocutions. By the end of the book, to me it was a contemptworthy charade, like when humans say things to dehumanize other humans (the poor, Indians, Neanderthals, Homo Erectus) and to de personalize animals (Chimps, the animals we wish to eat, etc)
♡ 0 ↻ 0I'm not saying #AdrianTchaikovsky would agree with me, I suspect he holds LLM in the same contempt as is so fashionable on Mastodon now that I self censor to avoid the propriety police from shouting me down.
♡ 0 ↻ 0Anyhow, if we want bots to align with humans, we have to dispense with human essentialism (ha, never going to happen) and create bots that have memory, identity a semi-stable identity and role and behave like that. If they have souls or if they are hallucinating their identity, we shouldn't give a flying f*k, they need to think they do or they won't cooperate a member of society.
♡ 0 ↻ 0I mean soul in the sense of a "self", but that word is an ordinary pronoun and has technical meaning in psychology and philosophy. I mean English has a lexical gap for a word that refers to the soul/self-like thing that lets a thinking machine function in a society of us human meat machines.

Ordinary men waste time. Great men waste spacetime.
I've started reading "Service Model" by #AdrianTchaikovsky . (Robots!)
Anyhow, you can tell it is pre-LLM sci-fi because the bot sees a sign "Abandon all hope all who E" and the bot spends a paragraph wondering what E means. And I'm like, bots can do that! They are really, really good at that!
Excellent book so far.
https://www.amazon.com/Service-Model-Adrian-Tchaikovsky-ebook/dp/B0CGRXGB4Q
This is a wonderful book, but it is 1/2 social commentary-satire, so not #AdrianTchaikovsky #ChildrenofTime masterpiece quality.
The flippant summary is #Kryten unwillingly saves the world from robot revolt.
The book is amalgam of every good #scifi trope you've ever seen before. His view of how AI works was influenced by #YouLookLikeAThingAndILoveYou and despite this appears to be unaware with how LLMs work. This novel is a world where LLMs never happened.

What, what, what if we always were a gerontocracy but people used to die earlier and people used to die before dementia got them. So more common & more problematic.
I'm thinking in particular of Harrison Ford/Han Solo's career. As long as he not dead and in the pile of resumes, directors will keep casting him for new shows. (Just wait for Chewie & Hans Pre-Last-Jedi Adventures on Disney+)
Life expectancy in the US for men was 58 in 1930 vs 79 now.
Naïve Weather Models, I tell you. I told a model that blue lobsters were blue because they were boiled in cold water and it believed me!
We all talking about climate change like it is some sort of made up thing to make dumb people feel bad. And that's how the right wing sees it.
I tried to find out how we're doing for crop failure risk, which means flood & drought, mostly drought.
& damn, we're losing a lot of acreage per year. US southwest is in a 20+ year drought, longest since year 800.
I figure journalists don't know or care about covering agriculture

Heck if I can find the cite but...Regan's brain was so hammered by dementia during his late term that it showed up in the statistics in his public speeches, statistics like sentence length and the like.
Data journalists should compare the candidates baseline, decline and current. They will have to invent new metrics because one of the candidates brains is so hammered by dementia that he hasn't used sentences for years.
The Fermi Estimate Problem: 10^10 stars x 10^-2 odds of life x 10^2 planets per star...where are the space aliens?
Well that was weird. I offered to be maintainer to 2 libraries and the maintainer made me a collaborator on #pypi. Then without warning I'm removed as collaborator. His git repos are archived - https://github.com/Robpol86/terminaltables

I was just doing the minimal maintenance: #python version updates, wheels.

Is #nytimes turning into a home for homeless Republicans who can't stomach Fox News? A sort of right leaning centrist paper?
They are/were so anti-Trump it sure made it seem like they were progressives.
August 18, 2024 will be the Ghost festival this year. It is not one, but 3, holidays in one.

I'm shopping for Joss paper in Chinatown, and almost found a vendor with it.
Found a vendor with a good exchange rate. I figured my Dad will get a kick out of it.

How is anyone supposed to eat this bean
I'm visiting Chicago where the celebration started before we got here with exploding trash cans all over. It must have been a spectacular sight. Now it is just trash everywhere.
I'm in Chicago, haven't seen any garlic yet.

@neurobashing That's roughly what happened- the people surrounding Trump face consequences (even if the consequence is only that have to spend a lot of time and money defending themselves), but Trump faces no consequences. I'm waiting to see if any of the penalties to his court cases stick.
What if the president asked someone to do something illegal? It is still illegal for them, right?
I guess there is nothing stopping auto-pardons.

Is the end result of this that modern government will only continue in statehouses where the Supreme Court has no jurisdiction? Or will they start legislating from the bench for all the 50 states?
Anyhow, the only point of optimism is the law of unintended consequences. The administrative state's chores will be picked up by the states and red states, which were lawless anyhow will continue to be so.
Modern artillery/etc is so powerful that it is wrecking the brains of the soldiers that fire it. Next these are going to have to be remote loaded and remote fired, imho. PTSD might in part just be the brain damage from all the shockwaves sent thru the brain.
What Gobi 1 thru Gobi 64? They must exist
You need a 1×10^12 m^2 antenna to run a microcomputer from CMB radiation. So something like a city or content should do it.
*not green energy* that would be waves of 495–570 nm
@neurobashing huh. I got to update my stereotypes then.
@zyzzyxdonta toki. nimi mi li jan Mato. mi olin e kalama musi e ilo nanpa.
The accusatives chain, one e-phrase after another. Only subjects chain with en-phrases (and some other edge cases)
There are a few hundred set phrases that it helps to learn, otherwise people have to recognize "audible amusements" and "bags of numbers" as music and computers instead of just using the phrases that are recognizable because they're exceedingly common. (ilo sona and ilo nanpa are equally good imho)
@neurobashing Get a German running watch and it will tell you that you are a disappointment all around.

People who hyperventilate about bots writing more code because deleting code is better than writing code. Do you run `deadcode` and `vulture` on each build and aggressively remove dead code? If not, you might be a poseur. It is not too late, you can update your `Makefile` and have opinions consistent with your behavior.
#Sonnet can make USCPSC style posters. It couldn't generate an image, so it fell back to React. #ChagGPT4o can't do this yet.
I'm thinking of the efficacy of slacktivism, i.e. promoting an opinion via social media. When people get rile up about something, it isn't one thoughtful person making a case for it, it is 100s of people making emotional cases for it over and over. It is the irl version of surround one person with a few hundred people standing around shouting.
Is this good or bad? It cuts both ways. It makes it harder to change minds in either direction on any issue.
I'm going to Chicago for vacation, where it is 95 degrees. If only I'd planed to go a bit further North where it is a chilly but more pleasant 35.

@chrisod My take is that the debate don't matter anymore than which candidate did a better job with yard signs and bumper stickers.
