So tea.xyz was/is going to let anyone who gets a merge request approved to claim ownership and then somehow I guess use that claim to get crypto for submitting (fake) security vulnerabilities and (fake) fixes. (I'm guessing this is pay-per-commit so an incentive to push bytes).
Even if it "works", as soon as the crypo is worth anything the promoters will dump their shares & criminals will steal all your crypto & dump it. There will be an immutable log of it, so it is ok

Copilot is like finding out that your dishwasher has an enslaved gnome inside it. The current iteration can carry on a reasonable conversation. A few iterations ago, a convo in the comment was impossible/impossibly frustrating. I think the number of tokens it is allowed to respond with is set so low it feels like its got brain damage. If it had some more space, I think it would say, "Before I autocomplete this, what the f are your doing, this doesn't make any sense" but it can't.

Turns out Dril was an LLM with his temperature set too high.
Mind blown.... in a causal graph you don't encode your assumptions on what relationships are positive, you encode assumptions on which are 0.
It might be dodgy to assume your drug cures the disease. But to assume the calendar is irrelevant, seems safe and it seems psuedosciency to worry about leaving out the assumption that lunar phases might be involved. (and so on for the full matrix of possible causal connections)

My git #multirepo tool is coming along. There are so many competitors in this space. I think I'm going to compete on the basis of UI, ease of use features, safety features.
It is impossible to not be opinionated & not having any opinions increases difficulty of use by deferring too many decisions to the user.

@frantz Where we're going, we don't need production deployment blackouts or maintenance windows.
IDEA: create a fork all your #python dependencies so when the maintainer dies or otherwise deletes the repo, you have a full copy and not just the sdist folder.

- kulupu + vividly descriptive modifiers that everyone will get the translation of "society" immediately (ha! good luck with that, reading tp is hard)
- a whole paragraph to explain what sort of kulupu, then you use kulupu sort of as a pronoun referring to your long explanation
- kulupu +whatever - now use that phrase so much that the community knows what it is whether they like it or not.
Next time someone says, "correlation isn't causation" I now can say, "didn't you keep reading in the stats textbook? The part about causal inference?"
Anyhow, the justifications remind me of Bayesian statistics, where you take prior knowledge and that allows you to say and test something more than "associations do/don't exist" #pywhy

Unplanned heat pump upgrade complete.
- Water heater is heat pump
- Furnace is mostly heat pump
That leaves fireplace & stove and then I'll only need natural gas for the coldest days and emergencies.
And the electric plant is still burning gas & other fossil fuels, but they burn it more efficiently than I can.

I'm hardly seeing any spam. People who run mastodon instances are complaining about spam. Dunno, reminds me of hosting my own wordpress blog. It was just dealing with spam & malicious PHP hackers all the time.
IDEA: postcard pypi. You distribute your app on the corkboard at the local library on a spool of DVDs. The user takes one and sends a postcard and SASE to each of the maintainers of each dependent library. If they like the postcard, they send you a floppy, DVD or USB keychain with the code. Once the user has everything, they copy all the files to site-packages.
(In the NPM version, each maintainer sends a postcard & SASE to each of their dependencies and so on.)

I think Gnu CLI UX principles are fossilized in an arbitrary past. I think if you're writing a cli tool, you need a UI that isn't just-a-bunch-of-switches for
- initialization
- command selection/command arg entry
If professional software developers are only learning 2 or 3 git commands and switches, are they going to learn your 15 commands and switches? Maybe, but not if there isn't some 0 effort path to learning if the tool is useful enough to invest in memorizing the switches.
My prediction: #astral #ruff will soon compete directly with codeclimate, sonarqube, codacy and the like. As far as I can tell, these products take a variety of free tools, repackage them and sell them to corporate customers with a hosted SaaS, sometimes with free tiers (zero marginal costs, so why not, it is a sales pipeline). They do so quietly and so who knows if they contribute anything back, if they violate the social norms of opensource or hire or compensate maintainers.
If I got a point, it is that this is nothing new.
If I had to come up with a way to fund opensource, I'd say the federal government should fund it, but heck if I know how grant would be made & managed. The government already has a mixed record in software purchasing. If, say, the gov't decided to fund jquery maintenance, would it happen in a way that would be better than how MS is maintaining it? Who knows.

There is an opensource funding model, it's called doing open source that no one asked for on company time. Spare time open source isn't funded.
Calling whataboutism when both issues are problems is fallacy fallacy. (i.e. calling out a fallacy when either it isn't actually a fallacy or not understanding that the conclusion could still be true even if poorly argued, and whataboutism really can be charged against any argument)
