@ChrisShort This is a bigger deal for companies that sell content (newspapers, etc). For all the individuals, imho, updating robots.txt is a symbolic gesture. Most ordinary people are writing content on someone else's machine (like here! or comments on youtube, etc) governed by someone elses Terms of Service

I'm reading up on longevity & paleontology (of mammals). My armchair theory of the day is: we get old and die because of our teeth. For literally billions of years, mammals create 2 sets of teeth for life (the have to fit together perfectly, so they are irreplaceable) Once your 2nd set are used up, you die. Everything else in your body evolved to work just well enough to last as long as your teeth.
Sharks (new teeth all the time) can live up to 400 years.

@floko I asked it to generate a prompt to ask an LLM to roleplay IG-11. It writes a long one. I use it and.... ChatGPT feels slightly better. I tried other star wars droids & some make it worse.
What is new is I have to say, "ONLY BRING UP THIS IF IT IS RELEVANT" or it will try to work prompt info into every answer.
This isn't really new, what is new is that the bot gets reminded *each* prompt. In the past it would eventually forget the 1st prompt.
Even #ChatGPT forgets that #civictech exists. Ask it to write a script to fetch the list of books by William Gibson via API. It will first reply "use google books" which requires an API token.
But you can query US Library of Congress and get the results without token.
I used to ask & answer question on #Stackoverflow. Then it got hard because everything had been asked & answered & you could get into fights for posting content that wasn't good enough.
Now I read questions & I don't answer because the first thing I'd do is check if #chatGPT knows the answer. Hypothetically I'd check if it actually works because I'm not a lazy moron, but either way, chatGPT code & chatGPT assisted answers are out of bounds.
Because the bad drive out the good, now it is people who just don't care- the post trash and know that they will get yelled at, but they'll also get an answer. Those people should be asking chatGPT directly because chatGPT doesn't care that you are a lazy, disinterested help-vampire and while *often* wrong, is still smarter than them.

@bugroar My advice to candidates is to always do the stupidest thing that will work. It is more impressive to quickly solve a problem with a stupid technique then to fail to solve a problem with a clever technique. If one does know their regex, then you'd want to solve it without regex and the attempt a refactoring with regex as a way to show off. (And it depends on the company & salary, if you're paying the top 0.01% of salaries, maybe you would expect people to show off & succeed on 1st try)
@KristianHarstad Like many people on this website I'm a techie & upper-middle class. I have no particular intuition on cost of living outside that range. People do figure out how to survive at all income levels (except the homeless when they literally die of exposure), so this comes down to a political question of what the lower bounds are and what the distribution curve should be for the rest.

The LinkedIn one seemed to work (took my photo & photo of my driver's license and decided I was me), but IRS's version is just frustration. Anyone who got thru IRSs has to be an imposter because I don't know anyone with that much patience.

I like that ChatGPT has a hard time with this. It doesn't know how to generate test data because it has no internal ability to count letters in a word.

So in rust if you ship binaries it is untrustworthy, but in python, if you ship pre-compiled wheels you make people happy? I'm so confused.
