@bugroar My advice to candidates is to always do the stupidest thing that will work. It is more impressive to quickly solve a problem with a stupid technique then to fail to solve a problem with a clever technique. If one does know their regex, then you'd want to solve it without regex and the attempt a refactoring with regex as a way to show off. (And it depends on the company & salary, if you're paying the top 0.01% of salaries, maybe you would expect people to show off & succeed on 1st try)
