re: climate impact of people choosing to attend/host big events (burning man, Berlin Marathon)
Everything we do is transformation of fossil fuels.
- all food - natural gas -> fertilizer -> grain -> meat (grass, you're so funny, it is a rounding error)
- all services - food -> people -> services
- all goods - oil -> plastic, oil -> ship, oil -> operate
You can't give up oil like cigarettes.
People (including me!) tend to think about climate as being a problem of direct usage of fossil fuels, e.g.
- car (burning gasoline)
- house (burning gas)Leaving things like books, clothing, side walks as innocent consumption. But all of that is embodied fossil fuel usage.
♡ 1 ↻ 2(how to get out of the Bors, guy in a well, "yet you participate in society problem"... I think most likely we will set all the fossil fuels on fire and wreck the global climate. We're good at making evolutionary changes (10% more fuel efficient cars!), but not good at leaving perfectly burnable fossil fuel in the ground forever & making sure no one else sets it on fire either)
Our efforts to reduce-reuse-recycle are lotto tickets that we might escape this mess.
