US Gov GPO style guide doesn't ban parenthetical plural(s), but google's developer style guide does.
I/we wish style guide(s) would just ban the use(s) of this/these visual wart(s).
It should be plural unless it is informal writing and then you can you use (s) to indicate that you didn't have time to think about what is right.
