Interesting "blog post" about why COBOL translates poorly into modern languages like C#
COBOL was (likely?) modeled on Assembler.
This matches what my coworker said- when you hit a wall with COBOL, you just switched to Assembler, which at the time seemed crazy, but if COBOL is thin layer over assembler, maybe not.
