ASTONISHING. Mastodon replies (to a thread) and mentions are completely different things. You can reply to a thread and suppress the mention notification by not including the handle in the reply. And the mention can be just anywhere. Reminds me of twitter days when you needed to know that `. @so-and-so` meant you wanted your reply to show in your follower's feed. Ancient twitter. Modern twitter seems to make the whole thread for all replies into a retweet. Everything is a retweet- yuck.
