THOT: pypi (and other package repos) is kind of like an anonymous social network.
- no one knows who anyone is there, outside they control a email address or username/password pair.
- almost everyone behaves
- people use it for its intended purpose
- moderation takes care of most bad behavior
Trying to think why in some anonymous places people behave vs some places they don't
If someone wanted to create a nazi bar, then anonymity is important, the politics of ultranationalism is outside the accepted norms, you could pay a real world cost for participating in it. (ostracism, someone could hurt your feelings by saying 'you're a moron' etc)
So places of bad behavior need anonymity, but a place of anonymity doesn't need to be a place of bad behavior. The people running 4chan invited the bad people, because they want the bad behavior and anonymity is just a precondition
