Another hybrid lotto ticket: old cars. You get transportation & a 1 in x chance that you don't have to pay $2K-$4K bills &/or lose the whole value of the car. I don't understand why cheapskate authors focus entirely on the low purchase price & getting lucky with no repairs.
The economist in me says that there is probably an equivalency between buying new & used cars after you put a price on the risk.
