Git was more successful than TFS in part because Git was organizationally incapable of taking a dependency on Sql, Office, VS, and well, every product in the entire MS catalog. It wasn't that those were bad products, just the dependencies created complexity.
Also, the existence of a GUI mean the tf commandline was trash because no one ever expected the tf commandline to be typed.
