Should Tech Leads also be managers? (% time coding vs time in meetings, etc) I think the answer changes as the team size goes from 1, to 2, 3, to 4, etc. In the 3-4 size teams, everyone is wearing multiple hats.

Another important ratio is how many manager types are on the team (PM, PO, Scrum, BA, UX all act as quasi-managers) vs individual contributors (the techies). Being a tech lead when there are 4-5 other quasi managers is not too bad.
♡ 0 ↻ 0On a team of 3, there is 1 boss (all manager-like roles combined) & everything depends on the personality of that 1 boss, the relative split of managerial tasks vs tech work is irrelevant & of course, everyone is overworked- there just aren't enough specialists.
