Presidential approval surveys are mixing measures of 2 things. I think Rs answer the question as "Given the president is a symbol of the country, do you hate your country?/Given the president is of the other party, do you hate your own party?"
and I think Ds answer the question as "Do you agree with policy positions that have been in the news recently?" This will give wildy different standard deviations over time-- Rs will be unwavering & Ds will be up and down. Not sure about Independents.
