W2 employment is a contract for:
1) your full attention (vs other employers)
2) to be on-call (i.e. during work hours your job is your 1st priority vs other employers)
That doesn't change even if your current employer underutilizes your time.
1099 work is a contract for:
1) Just enough of your attention
2) Availability on some reasonable time horizon
3) Easily measured outputs, so anything involving uncertainty, creativity, or "unspecifiables" is out.♡ 2 ↻ 01099 work is suitable for
- upgrading a db from version to versoin +1
- maintenance (fix a bug that popped up)
- operations (restore the database)
W2 is for
- greenfield dev work
- innovation
