Economics question. Engineers (and SW developers) are like lotto ticket generators. How should you pay a lotto ticket generator? If you pay them by how much you win, there is no incentive to work on losers. As for splitting winning tickets, all options seem unfair.
I think in practice, when an engineer creates a billion dollar winning lotto ticket, they get paid for that year of labor & that is it. On the otherhand, engineers that create losing lotto tickets, get paid, and eventually fired.
