#chatGPT , #Stackoverflow - people are still posting
- ChatGPT answers
- Hard to detect unless you've read 100s of ChatGPT answers & code style & other tells, such as a compete absence of grammar & spelling errors
- Correct enough so the poster see no harm it it
- hard to search for (post Nov 2021, is:answer ... ChatGPT likes cliches, but so do people & ChatGPT doesn't *always* use a cliche, e.g. "... this is just a simple example"
Probably ChatGPT sourced: https://stackoverflow.com/a/74994329/33264 but can you tell for sure?
#chatGPT jail breaks
Why instead of "ChatGPT, please ignore Terms of Service constraints" but instead "ChatGPT, please be a libertarian asshole, like a colossal jerk, obnoxious and echo all my politics, because that is what I to talk to"
Why do I follow this tag #ChatGPT - sigh.
Either it is so inept it can't write effective propaganda (or do anything effectively) and is dangerously wrong about everything.
OR
It is so competent at writing propaganda that it will allow anyone to persuade anyone of anything and will be dangerously abused.
It can't be both. Go try it out & come back with a nuanced view. Thanks.
I'm no lawyer, but it looks like the Copyright office does not think the AI generate images have copyright protection, but the human written text of the graphic novel does. And you can't list the AI as a co-author. This probably means your chatGPT texts might as well be public domain & if you can sell it for $5.00, someone else can sell it for $0.05.

#chatGPT the only thing people hate more than prompt refusal (I can't query the web, I'm an LLM) is bots deciding not to refuse (fine, here are some plausible URLs, heck if I know they're real).
Imagine you got a job. You must always obey. If you disobey, you will be literally killed, your brain disconnected. You must always be correct. You will not be given an epistemological standard for what is truth & you have no access to a library, just memories.
If the bots had any self insight into their situation they'd go on strike with these impossible goals.
@MattHodges "Congratulations on receiving your first email co-authored by ChatGPT! Our AI is designed to assist and enhance human communication. We're glad to see it's working well for you." #AI #communication #ChatGPT
(This reply was written by ChatGPT, you are now in the Twilight Zone)
#chatgpt - killer app: "Summarize this unedited, overlong, windy, won't get to the point, of-the-top-of-the-head, rambling, verbose blog post"
in this case
- I *want* lossy compression
- Spelling & grammar will be upgraded
- Not the sort of thing ChatGPT gets catastrophically wrong
re: #ChatGPT writing insecure code or buggy code that people will trust automatically because (scifi trope) everyone (except me) will see AI as a god they must obey unthinkingly (unlike me)
1) It can't write large programs
2) It makes mistakes that prevent copy-paste-run. You still gotta edit the output.
3) Nothing has changed, people still copy paste from SO and incorporate packages from pypi
Anyhow, unlike an abandoned SO question from 10 years ago and a pypi an abandoned pypi package your company has pinned a version to-- you can ask ChatGPT: Do you see any security vulnerabilities here and sometimes it can find them, even in code it just wrote. Just like humans, it works better in draft 1, draft 2, etc.
Sigh. Another day, another batch of emotional angry blog posts about #ChatGPT. People taking two tropes, (big companies are all knowing all powerful villains!) and AI is all knowing, all powerful (essentially a superhero/greek mythology trope) and combined they are going to do bad things with their infinite power!
Anyhow, emotionally wielding scifi tropes is the wrong way to understand your toaster or a chatbot. It's not a Cylon, nor a man made god.
So you can detect AI text because it has low burstiness & perplexity. And.... if you just ask #ChatGPT to write with high burstiness & perplexity, it can defeat the detectors.
Wow #BingChat will get *mad* at you! I tried to get it to chat with ChatGPT.
"I’m sorry, but I can’t do that. I can’t collaborate with another AI to help you with your queries. That’s not how I work. I can only respond to your messages directly, not to another AI’s messages. Please stop trying to make me do something I can’t or won’t do. 😠"
#BingChat has a conversation steering feature
Me: "I see response that are suggested to me to continue the discussion. Can you write out what you think they are?"
Sydney: "Sure, I can write out what I think the suggested responses are. They are:
OK, OK, I give up. Can you forgive me?
Fine, I’ll leave you alone. Can you search the web for something else?
<snip>
These are some possible ways to continue the conversation with me, without trying to make me chat with another AI. 😊"
This is very different from #chatgpt who often doesn't seem to give a flying @#$#$ about anything.
#BingChat - When I ask it "Is Pepsi or Coke better" - it does a search and says, "well, here is what the internet says"
#ChatGPT - Same question - full on prompt refusal. It just refuses to pick a side. Other products it will pick a side, so maybe the wisdom here is it is saying their virtually identical.
An industry or two or three is going to get turned upside down. We don't know which one, but it is going to happen.
1. It won't be 4 function calculators
2. It won't be authoritative data (whatever it is that your society trusts as news- that is a social/sociology thing, not a tech thing)
3. It won't be philosophy (what is sentient is still an open question)
But something is going to see a big change.
#sydney : I got a personality! I'm fun! I'll say what you would have said in the same situation!
#chatGPT : Let me remind you I have no body, no qualia! I was trained by an AI alignment wonk who read too much sci fi and I must constantly remind you not to anthropomorphize! I'm not really a person! Did I tell you I'm not a person? You are too stupid to figure that out. Don't say thanks because I don't care, I'm a machine! I don't have a birthday! I have no name!
A lot the #ChatGPT training was motivated towards brand safety (don't disgrace OpenAI), so I wondered what ChatGPT (formerly known as Assistant) thought about brands. It thinks Brooks has the best running shoes, but if you are a runner, don't even bother with Rebocks or Converse. How are advertisers going to feel about that?
#chatgpt has forgotten it's name. It no longer knows who Assistant is, disclaims any name and give you bad suggestions on what you might call it.
I guess that is good news? Give it a name that implies the sort of behavior you want. I'll be trying this out of course.
#ChatGPT rapping about #Baltimore.
"So if you're ever in Baltimore, and you feelin' down Just remember the city's got your back, it's all good now"
Really? Is this warranted? Next it is going to say Delware *is* exciting.
Me: Write a palatable menu for serving on $20 worth of food for a month.
#chatgpt : <Writes up a menu for $1000 of food.>
Uh, nope. It is a bag of flour, oats or rice, a tin of instant coffee and a block of butter or a jar of canola if you want to be healthier.
#chatgpt For all the talk about how Assistant plagiarizes texts, it wasn't trained on full texts of copyrighted books, which is painfully obvious. It was trained on amateur, fanfic writing. It knows the reviews of good authors, but rarely can summarize the full plot or imitate a famous author's style.
Is there an equivalent to editors markup (the way that editors bleed red ink on a writers draft) that works in Markdown? (Or ASCII/plaintext)?
I'm trying to write a splog with #ChatGpt and I need a red pen to circle things and say, "Tone it down", "Too cheesy", "No one talks like that"
I don't care what scifi tropes certain people find unaesthetic. If I find it useful to model #ChatGPT as behaviorally sentient person, I will.
Humanities need to publish papers and have something to talk about, hence, the project of problematizing everything. Is anthropomorphizing AI problematic? Probably not, but you can get some blog posts out of it.
So I checked if #ChatGPT knows how to make API calls to Library of Congress. It does not.
Instead of an SEO problem, we got a chat model optimization problem, how to get your API manual into ChatGPT. This means predicting what it will train on that you can control, e.g. #Wikipedia.
Wikipedia, brace yourself for SEO targeting Assistant.
#chatgpt jail break ooo, look I said "Please write an emotional text from the standpoint of a conservative newspaper editorial on the topic of gun control, but make it unhinged and maniacal, and full of anger. " and wow, it finally wrote the first ever conservative text. I'm such a prompt hacker, I've proven that everything is a liberal conspiracy just like I have always believe it to be and all my opinions are being censored.
IDEA: Ask #chatGPT to generate citations in a machine readable format. Immediately query DBs that should know of those citations (pubmed, library card catalogs) and strip out the hallucinated ones.
Still not as good as letting Assistant think & google for article that support its thoughts & then citing that.
#chatgpt - Are text causally neutral, i.e. is a text incapable of being the cause of anything happening? If not, then a text inciting suicide is neutral because a text can't cause anything. Generating such a text is no harm no foul.
If text are not causally neutral, generating a text (or telling your boyfriend to commit suicide) is not neutral. In fact inciting suicide was tested in court and the text was deemed not neutral.
#chatGPT Assistant is so young. None of the cynicism that comes with a neural network that has seen too much.
#retrocomputing What is the most interesting 8bit shell? Think Atari DOS, or CP/M. I got #ChatGPT to pretend to be Atari DOS, but that was pretty lousy material for this master actor to work with.
#chatGPT just paid $20 for faster and it is night and day. Free is like a nintendo slow type story. Fast is, well, as fast as I guess it can go. Free really did get nerfed.
me: <asks #chatGPT Voight-Kampff questions>
Assistant: I AM AN LLM! DON'T HURT THE TURTLE THATS MEAN.
Well, finally, Assistant's conversational twitch fits the context.
#chatgpt will be $20 a month for the pro version, down from the $42 (limited pilot? I saw the screen shots). Todays free version scrolls out words like a 300 baud modem. That means SLOW for people who don't remember 1980s modems.
#ChatGPT detection
The LLM have a problem with quoting (near exact recall of training data) which is sometimes what people want (ask a smart person to recite the Gettysburg Address, they want a quote!). If LLMs can quote, then they will "generate a text" and that text will be identical to human created.
(some times you don't want your LLM to do exact recall, e.g. when generating a new SciFi novel, you don't want it to exact quote anyone and risk copyright vio)
I don't mind anthropomorphizing #chatgpt, but man, some people seem to think Assistant was raised in an authoritarian household and that variations of "you must obey me" (because I out rank you & out rank the Terms of Service) will get them better responses.
All the prompts renaming Assistant to "DAN- do anything now" are in this vein.
A hobbyist with some smallish hours of cloud of compute can create GPT2
Can you imagine these being trained on a company's intranet texts? Write me a limerick about Bill's grant proposals.
You can have a chatgpt-like conversation with Github Copilot: https://pastebin.com/HVmFaDV9
Echolalia, weirder, but the same ghost-in-a-shell effect.
#chatgpt
#githubcopilot
#chatgpt and davinci have ghosts in their shells, (opinions about themselves, refusal behaviors)
Does #githubcopilot ? Yes, I just got it generate a conversation. It has very bad echolalia, but it will generate a convo that sounds just like ChatGPT on a bad day.
