admins need a large upfront pile (one time fixed costs) of money and monthly flow of money there after. Since the business model is charity, people should suggest donors give, say $100 up front and $10 a month (scaled that to whatever monthly amount actually makes sense to donors)

Mastodon development needs a stream of money separate from hosting. So you should donate to the project as well as the host of your particular instance.
