Reading the tweets of people really cheezed off about suggestions that AI could be sentient or have rights, you also need to check if they're the same people that need other humans or animals to not have sentience or rights to justify the status quo.

Arguments seem to be
- definitionally only my moral community is sentient/has rights
- Is it AGI? Well, let's check my goals, do I want cheap cotton in the south and to eat the same food my mother fed me?

Oddly, this group of people are also the group of people that think AI useless, so I guess they're really going on about the definition (intelligence, sentience is my people, end of story)

Oh, and steel-manning against the "what about" counter-argument: Animals, all humans, and sentient AI, we should be nice to all of them. We can work on several issues at once. Also, the dialog on animals is frozen, people are dug in & unwilling to think about it. Right now, people are willing to think about if AI is sentient & that may lead to thoughts about if animals are sentient and what the implications are. (Or people that are outside our moral community, them too!)
