The organizers knew their likely attendees, not everyone had an opinion, but the majority who did, were pro-mask & were vocal about it in advance of the event.
Counterfactually, if many actual attendees were anti-mask or bothered by it, you'd expect to see
- noncompliance (no mask or wrong worn, worn ineffectively as a sham)
- cheap masks
But that isn't what we saw. We saw very high compliance rates & the vast majority of people wore the good masks.
Self-replies
If people want to run a regional pycon in a state where the culture wars swing the other way, it is a big club. Heck there are even pycon in places where American culture wars are not a thing, where people are arguing about something else.
