I want to kill the reverse chronological feed, mostly. It isn't an algorithm, but it encourages slot-machine behavior. What to replace it with?
I use this for ~3 things
- socializing. I want to see mutuals and people who reply. Reposts and broadcasters (people who post but don't reply) are distractions.
- special interest content reading. Now the people are a distraction. I want to see curated content, or sometimes recommended content
- account/content discovery. I want to see random stuff
Self-replies
Using reverse chronological feed for all of these interferes with all of these and you get a poor use of your time that you keep engaging with, non-the-less, like a mindless retiree feeding their retirement into a slot machine one quarter at a time, except you're burning your life, 15 seconds at a time for a experience that will result in no memory.
It is like the fast-forward button that lets you skip forward to a few minutes in the future except it shortens your lifespan by the same few minutes.
At least the quantum temporarily "cease to exist" box in the 1st season of Red Dwarf let you out at the same age that you entered.
With my new mastodon client that acts more like a RSS reader, once the noise is removed, I could see a crowd of people, hidden in all the noise.
After removing the people and news, I could see the cool software people are recommending
Still working on account/content discovery, a reader client might just be a bad way to do account discovery, needs a different tool altogether.
